Paper Collage from a series of seven, 2017 Madrid.

Description
This collage is part of a series of seven titled “Embracing series”. each work measures are 24 x 32 cm. Main material and basis is a series of photographs entitled “Présence” by Gareth McConnell, published in POP magazine #37. Each woman body is illuminated by a color spot and radiates light.
My intervention on these naked women bodies is abstract, it is more about a superposition than a transformation. This seven plates series echoes french artist Orlan with her famous 1977 performance called “Le baiser de l’artiste” (The Kiss of the Artist) and also each plate of this series refers to another artist without being a plagiarism. Let’s just say that I had this artist in a corner of my mind at the time I executed the composition. In this case for “Free hug 2” it was Vasili Kandinsky.
On the larger versions you may see dust and weft of the prints used. this is intended and is part of the original work. However, the printable version have been retouched by the artist to erase some unwanted elements.

Artist Info
Laurent Seljan is a French self-taught multidisciplinary artist. He draws and paints his universe since childhood. After Leaving Beaux-Arts school, he worked as a photographer for dance compagnies and was a set designer for several years. He initially used the collage as sketches for his paintings and it was not until 2013 that he decided to make it into works as itself. Although he continues to paint, collage became his main mode of expression.
